The Physical Expression of Emotional Needs

Somatisation describes the way emotional experiences can be expressed through the physical body. In our canine companions, emotional tension, uncertainty, or ongoing stress may quietly ripple through their inner systems, appearing as changes in digestion, skin health, behaviour, or general well-being. These signs are expressions of deeper feelings seeking understanding and support.

How Emotional Stress Affects the Body

Digestive Changes

Emotional strain can influence the flow and rhythm of the digestive tract. Stress can affect gastric acid secretion and intestinal motility, subtly altering how food is broken down and nutrients are absorbed. These shifts may not always be obvious, yet they reflect the deep connection between emotional and physical well-being. Because digestion and emotions are so closely linked, the gut is often one of the first places where stress manifests itself.

The Microbiome and Emotional Balance

The gut is home to a vast community of beneficial microorganisms - the microbiome. These microbes help produce vitamins, short-chain fatty acids, and chemical messengers that support emotional steadiness. When stress unsettles this delicate ecosystem, physical symptoms such as digestive imbalance, sensitivity, or inflammation may arise.

The Skin as an Emotional Canvas

The skin is more than a protective barrier; it reflects the body’s inner state and emotional balance. Emotional stress can disrupt hydration, natural oils, barrier integrity, and the natural balance of the microbiome on the skin. This can leave the skin more vulnerable to dryness, redness, itchiness, irritation, or microbial imbalances such as yeast overgrowth. When a companion scratches, licks, or nibbles persistently, it may indicate both physical discomfort and emotional unease.

Common Signs of Somatisation

You may notice:

  • digestive upsets

  • skin irritation

  • tension in posture or movement

  • withdrawal, irritability, restlessness or signs of unease

  • changes in appetite

These signs often ebb and flow with emotional experiences.

How Guardians Can Support Their Companion

Provide Stability and Emotional Safety

A steady, calm presence helps ease emotional strain and fosters a sense of security. Consistency in daily routines and interactions allows your companion to feel safe and understood.

Support a Natural, Species-Appropriate Diet

Feeding a balanced diet suited to your companion’s needs supports digestion, nutrient absorption, and emotional well-being. Gentle, predictable feeding routines provide reassurance and help maintain natural rhythms.

Encourage Natural Behaviours

Allow opportunities for movement, exploration, play, and rest in ways that feel safe and familiar. Supporting natural behaviours helps regulate emotions and fosters confidence.

Care for Skin and Body

Reduce exposure to stressors and toxins whenever possible. Spending quiet, quality time together particularly outdoors in natural settings - can help both body and emotions settle.

Observe with Compassion

Pay attention to subtle shifts in behaviour, posture, or energy. These gentle signals often indicate how your companion is feeling and allow you to respond early, supporting their comfort and emotional well-being.

When to Seek Professional Guidance

If your companion is showing signs of physical discomfort, or sudden behavioural shifts, it is always best to consult a veterinary professional or a qualified practitioner who understands both emotional and physical well-being. Somatisation deserves thoughtful, holistic care.

A Final Note

Our companions feel deeply. Their bodies gently reflect what their emotions cannot speak aloud. By listening with empathy and responding with steady, loving presence, we can help restore harmony within the body.
